Prof. Dr. Baybars Tek,
PProf. Dr. Ömer Baybars Tek was born in 1945, in Istanbul. Between 1968 and 1969, he worked in Finance Ministry General Directorate of Budget and Financial Control.
In 1969, he won AID scholarship and went to USA Michigan University. He obtained a MBA degree from this university and became an assistant in Ege University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences Marketing Department.
He obtained “Economics and Commercial Sciences Doctor” title in 1975 with the thesis he wrote about "Transfer of Supermarkets to Turkey”; a thesis first-time written in Turkey. He won Belgium Government’s Technical Assistance Scholarship in 1977 and went to Vrije Universiteit Brussels as a guest researcher in order to make researches about International Marketing and Retail Trade (Merchandizing) in Europe.
In August 1978, by getting an acceptance from USA Michigan State University he went to this university by “Guest Researcher” statute and continued his associate professorship studies with Professor Stanley C. Hollander, the worldwide famous retail merchandizing teacher.
He became an associate professor in Ege University Faculty of Business Administration with his "Research on the Choice of Strategic Establishment for Retail Stores" thesis. Between 1981 and 1982, he conducted the presidency of Marketing Department by proxy and in person. In 1982, he won Fulbright scholarship and went to the USA in order to study marketing.
In July 1986, he went to Austria by obtaining Salzburg seminar scholarship and gave two presentations about "Philanthropy and Non-Profit Organizations in Turkey" and "The Role of Social Marketing in Non-Profit Organizations".
He gave the presentation "Retail Structure and Consumerism in Turkey; The Question of Retail Technology Transfer and Economic Development" in the symposium about International Conference on Marketing and Economic Development", organized in Istanbul, in 1986, and he conducted the presentation about “Distribution Structure”.
He gave a presentation about “Adaptation of Turkish Consumerism Movement to the EEC" in 12th World Consumer Congress, organized in Spain, Madrid, in 1987, by the International Organization of Consumers Unions (IOCU) and Madrid University.
He is one of the pioneers who played an important role, by following the protection of the consumer in Turkey, in the release of the Law on Protection of Consumers number 4077, by his domestic and international scientific, operative works and the reports he provided to Industry and Trade Ministries. With his article published in Yeni Asır newspaper on March 16th, 1983, he presented for the first time in Turkey “World Consumers Right Day”.
Also with his article published in Dünya Gazetesi, on March 15th and 16th, 1988, he presented the first translation of United Nations Guidelines for Consumer Protection.
He obtained the Professor title on October 7th, 1988. Prof. Dr. Ömer Baybars Tek wrote Turkey’s first retail book "“Retail Marketing Management”" about department stores, supermarkets and merchandising in Turkey.
Including "Retail Marketing Management", he has four books; "Principles of Marketing: Global Managerial Approach: Turkey Applications" (8th edition), "Physical Distribution Management" and "Principles of Marketing and Junior Achievement" (Between 1988 and 1999, he translated into Turkish Junior Achievement economics books, of 1000 pages in total, that were used to teach economics and business administration to high school students in more than 130 countries, including Turkey. He has lecture notes about Principles of Marketing, Marketing Management, Packaging Management, Consumer Behaviors and Foodstuff Marketing.
He has several conference presentations given in Athens, Kansas, Brussels, Washington and other cities and many articles and writings published in monthly economic magazines such as Capital, scientific magazines and newspapers.
In VI. World Marketing Conference, organized in Istanbul on July 18th, 1993, he took place as Local Committee Member and Moderator, gave a presentation and got the certificate of high achievement two times from The Academy of Marketing Science.
Moreover, he has been given Certificates of Appreciation by Turkish Women’s Union and plaques and Certificates of Honors by Consumers’ Union, Lions and Rotary Clubs. On June 1993 as a guest of Poland Gdansk University Foreign Trade Institute, he gave seminars about Maritime Transporting in Turkey and European Union.
He presented “World Maritime Day” to Turkey, for the first time on September 29th, 1993 in a morning program on TRT 1 TV and in press.
Prof. Dr. Tek, who organized several domestic and international meetings about NATO summer seminars and marketing; worked and still works as coordinator, scientific magazine referee, scientific and executive committee member and moderator, and since 1971 he lectured and/or lectures Principles of Marketing, Retail Marketing, Marketing Management, Marketing Planning, Export Import Management, Physical Distribution Management, International Marketing, Consumer Behaviors, Packaging Management, Business Administration, Human Resource Management, Strategic Marketing, Protection of EU and Consumer, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Sales Management, Vessel Marketing, Retail Management, Electronic Commerce (Marketing) etc. for undergraduates, postgraduate studies and doctor’s degree, in Ege University Faculty of Economic and Commercial Sciences, Business Administration Faculty, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Nutrition and Fine Arts Faculties and Vocational School, Dokuz Eylül University Maritime Business and Management Vocational School and Social Sciences Institute, and Yaşar University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences.
Prof. Dr. Tek, gave marketing, sales etc. training and conferences to several private and public institutions, including KOSGEB – Small and Medium Enterprises Development Organization, and supermarket chains in Anatolia’s different cities. Prof. Dr. Tek, who has been a member of The State Planning Organization, VI. and VIII. Five-Year Development Plan, “Protection of Consumer Specialization Commission”, was the General Secretary of Protection of Consumer Union Foundation between 1989 and 1990.
Prof. Dr. Tek was the founding member and Chairman of Ege Fulbright Graduates Association. He was also a member of American Marketing Association. He is a member of Mülkiyeliler Birliği, Michigan State University Graduates Association, Protection of Consumer Foundation, Consumers Association and American Retailer Instructors’ Association. He served as in Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Advisory Board member for three years. Between 1995 and 2011, he was Turkey Marketing Association Board of Directors member and Vice President.
Between 1990 and 1997, Prof. Dr. Tek was assigned two times to Maritime School of Business and Management, teaching in English, and served as Manager for six years. He created Turkey’s second shipboard department in this establishment, raising masters unlimited, worked as head of the department and consultant to his first captains’ postgraduate thesis.
Prof. Dr. Tek, who works as a consultant in several establishments, including Gazete Ege, was Izmir Metropolitan Municipality TANSAŞ Chairman Advisor and Selçuk Yaşar Sports and Education Foundation Board of Directors member.
He received “Success” and “Attribution to Productivity” awards in “Protection of Consumer” writing contest, organized in 1998, by National Productivity Centre. He was rewarded with a plaque from Modern Retailers Association in 1998, in Istanbul due to his scientific and operative attributions to retailing and merchandizing sectors.
He got the second certificate of high achievement in 1998, by reason of his moderator mission in Multicultural Marketing Conference’s Central Europe, Eastern Europe and Middle East sessions organized by Academy of Marketing Science. On October 20th, 2000, he received Turkish Society for Quality (KALDER) high achievement plaque due to his contribution to Turkish Society for Quality (KALDER) Search for Excellence Symposium.
By winning, for the second time, the Fulbright scholarship, Prof. Dr. Tek went to Michigan State University in order to make researches in electronic commerce. He lectured Consumer Behavior and Retailing Management, in Marketing and Supply Chain Management Department in 2002, in this school, where he did a MBA (The Eli Broad College of Business–The Eli Broad Graduate School of Management) on marketing in 1971.
After he came back to Turkey, upon Sabancı University’s proposal, Prof. Dr. Tek went to this university as a guest lecturer, as from September 2002 and for a year, in order to coordinate and prepare retailing and modern merchandizing programs.
He worked as Head of Department of International Logistics Management at Yaşar University. Prof. Dr. Tek knows English and French. He is married and father of one child.
